Ranma Saotome é um artista marcial de primeira classe e prodígio da escola de artes marciais Saotome "Anything-Goes". Enquanto treinavam na China, ele e seu pai enfrentam um destino terrível quando acidentalmente caem em uma fonte amaldiçoada. Agora, Ranma está amaldiçoado a se transformar em uma menina quando for molhado com água fria, e somente a água quente pode transformá-lo novamente em um menino. As coisas ficam ainda mais complicadas quando Ranma descobre que seu pai providenciou para que ele se casasse com uma das três filhas de Soun Tendo, a fim de garantir o futuro do Tendo dojo. Embora Soun saiba da situação difícil de Ranma, ele ainda está determinado a prosseguir com o noivado e escolhe sua filha mais nova, Akane, que por acaso é uma habilidosa artista marcial e é famosa por odiar os homens. Ranma ½ segue as aventuras hilariantes de Ranma e Akane enquanto eles encontram vários oponentes, conhecem novos interesses amorosos e encontram diferentes maneiras de irritar um ao outro, tudo isso enquanto o noivado paira sobre suas cabeças.
