Nos anos finais da era Bakumatsu viveu um lendário assassino conhecido como Hitokiri Battousai. Temido como um assassino impiedoso, ele era incomparável em todo o país, mas desapareceu misteriosamente no auge da Revolução Japonesa. Já se passaram dez anos de paz desde então, mas a simples menção de Battousai ainda causa terror nos corações dos veteranos de guerra. Sem o conhecimento deles, Battousai abandonou seu estilo de vida manchado de sangue em um esforço para se arrepender de seus pecados, agora vivendo como Kenshin Himura, um espadachim errante com uma atitude alegre e uma vontade forte. Prometendo nunca mais matar, Kenshin se dedica a proteger os fracos. Um dia, ele encontra Kaoru Kamiya em seu dojo de kendo, que está sendo ameaçado por um impostor que afirma ser Battousai. Depois de receber ajuda de Kenshin, Kaoru permite que ele fique no dojo, e assim o ex-assassino interrompe temporariamente suas viagens. Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan conta a história de Kenshin enquanto ele se esforça para salvar aqueles que precisam ser salvos.
