Numa fatídica noite de verão de 2006, Mutta Nanba e seu irmão mais novo, Hibito, testemunham o que acreditam ser um OVNI voando em direção à Lua. Este fenómeno impressionante e invulgar leva os dois irmãos a prometerem tornar-se astronautas, com Hibito a apontar para a Lua e Mutta, convencido de que o irmão mais velho tem de estar um passo à frente, para Marte. Agora adulto, a vida não foi como Mutta imaginou: ele trabalha diligentemente em uma empresa automotiva, enquanto Hibito está a caminho de ser o primeiro japonês a pisar na Lua. No entanto, depois de perder o emprego, Mutta tem uma oportunidade inesperada de alcançar seu irmão mais novo quando a Agência Japonesa de Exploração Aeroespacial, comumente conhecida como JAXA, aceita sua inscrição para participar da próxima seleção de astronautas. Apesar das dúvidas sobre as suas perspectivas, Mutta não está disposto a desperdiçar esta oportunidade única e, assim, embarca numa jornada ambiciosa para cumprir a promessa feita há 19 anos.
